Born in Manzanillo (Cuba), Alexey León is a saxophonist, flautist and composer brought up in Moscow, a fact that is clear on records such as ‘Cuba meets Russia’ (2015). His latest work, ‘Influenciado’ (2022), represents a tribute to Afro-Cuban jazz and to the pioneers of Latin jazz. In this respect, León stands out for his impetuous, melodious, contemporary style with influences from great classics of jazz linked to Latin roots in one way or another: Chano Pozo, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, McCoy Tyner, Paquito D’Rivera and Chucho Valdés & Irakere. ‘Influenciado’ is also the title of his own composition, idiosyncratic to his style, which is based on the structure of the famous ‘Mambo influenciado’, by Chucho Valdés. At the Jamboree he will play in the company of the trumpeter Carlos Sarduy (Chucho Valdés, Irakere, Richard Bona), one of the great names from the Cuban community, the Danish pianist Carl Winther (Jerry Bergonzi, Billy Hart, Markus Strickland) and the Cuban double bassist, in this case from the Madrid scene, Reinier Elizalde ‘El Negrón’ (Chucho Valdés). Top-class twinning of Cuba and jazz.
