With El Cazador de la Luz (Quadrant, 2013), Gorka Garay released one of the best debut albums of anyone of his generation. More than five years after that milestone, the Barcelona saxophonist does it again with El cazador de la luz vol. 2: Drunk Jumps (2019, Quadrant). Like the initial album, the common factor uniting this project is the search for simplicity. The group members are seeking the essence of the message Garay wants to put across in each composition and trying to captivate the listener with mysterious, exotic melodies. This trio has extremely diverse influences, ranging from Mulatu Astatke’s Ethiojazz to a style of jazz closer to the Monk or Coltrane sounds of the sixties.
