James Carter tenor sax · Gerard Gibbs keyboards · Alex White drums
James Carter began his career under the tutelage of Donald Washington and was catapulted into prominence when Lester Bowie invited him to play in his band in 1988. Since then, Carter has been a prominent figure on the jazz scene, participating in a wide range of projects spanning from dixieland to fusion and free jazz. His 2000 album “Chasin’ the Gypsy” is a testament to his versatility, recorded with his cousin, jazz violinist Regina Carter. Additionally, he has won the DownBeat magazine Critics and Readers Choice awards for baritone saxophone on multiple occasions and has collaborated with Ravi Coltrane, Chris Potter, Nicholas Payton, Eric Reed, Kurt Elling, Terell Stafford, and many other musicians. His discography as a leader includes titles like ‘JC on the Set’ (1994), ‘Jurassic Classics’ (1995), and ‘Live at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge’ (2004), showcasing his ability to lead and his passion for exploring different sounds and textures within jazz.
