From the state of Connecticut, in the USA, comes rapper and poet Akua Naru. At the Jamboree, she will perform songs from her latest album, ‘All About Love: New Visions’ (2024), inspired by African-American and feminist activist Bell Hooks. Recorded with the collaboration of the string ensemble Ensemble Resonanz, it addresses social issues and links them with the concept of love —”love is a way of being free,” she says at the album presentation. Since she debuted with her first album, ‘The Journey Aflame’ (2011), Akua Naru has become one of the most unique voices in the hip-hop scene, with a style influenced by soul and jazz and an unequivocal commitment to music, society, culture, and the political struggle of the African-American people. As an example, she is the author of pieces such as ‘Toni Morrison of Hip Hop’. Akua Naru has collaborated with Tony Allen, Angelique Kidjo, Christian Scott, Mulatu Astatke, Bernard Purdie, and others.
