Since the 1980s, New Yorker Benny Green has been one of the most renowned pianists on the jazz scene. A brilliant instrumentalist since childhood, Green learned to play jazz at a young age, memorizing solos by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and other jazz totems. Before he was 16, he was already accompanying musicians like Fay Carroll. He then worked with trumpeter Eddie Henderson and in a big band led by Chuck Israels. In the early 80s, he met the pianist Walter Bishop, of whom he considers himself a disciple. He then collaborated with Bobby Watson and Betty Carter. He was also part of the Jazz Messengers (1987-1989) and Freddie Hubbard’s group, starting in 1989. In the 90s, he replaced Gene Harris in the famous Ray Brown trio. Sponsored by Oscar Peterson, he won the prestigious Glen Gould International Protege Price in 1993. In 1997, he began a prolific solo career, while collaborating with Diana Krall, among other artists. From his extensive discography, works such as those he signed with the Ray Brown trio, the duo he recorded with Oscar Peterson or the albums he published on the Criss Cross label stand out. His style draws on the expressive power of Errol Gardner, Bud Powell, Phineas Newborn and Oscar Peterson himself. Green is an undisputed reference in jazz piano.
