In 2023 the centenary of the birth of one of the most important pianists and composers in the history of Jazz was commemorated: Elmo Sylvester Hope. Despite being a key player in the development of bebop piano—along with Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk—Elmo Hope went practically unnoticed throughout his short life. He was better known and revered by many musicians than by the general public and constituted what is often called a “cursed” musician, with few opportunities for work and record contracts. A prodigious pianist, he also stood out as an exceptional composer. For posterity, he left a legacy with works of great caliber that reflect his inner world. Drummer Enrique Heredia rescues some of those pieces for a project titled ‘Elmo Hope Centennary Quintet’, which brings together top musicians to vindicate the original work of Elmo Hope.
