Fran Ramos is a young saxophonist and flutist from Alicante who burst onto the Barcelona scene with his debut album, ‘Spaces Especies’ (Sedajazz, 2022). The album is rooted in the exploratory essence of European and American jazz but is influenced by southern music genres such as flamenco, Latin, and rock. Notably, Ramos has collaborated with artists like Juanito Makandé, El Canijo de Jerez, Reincidentes, and Carlos Sarduy. ‘Spaces Espècies’ captures Ramos’s experience in various earthy and rooted scenes, as well as his training and journey as a jazz musician, working with musicians like Giulia Valle, Fèlix Rossy, Toni Vaquer, Gorka Benitez, Perico Sambeat, and the Liceu Jazz Grup, among others. According to Ramos, all these elements create “a galactic atmosphere called ‘Space Especies’.” Meanwhile, Gorka Benitez, one of his mentors, says, “If there’s one thing Fran and his music have, it’s a lot of truth flowing through his veins; pure music.”
