GORKA BENÍTEZ QUARTET - Jamboree Jazz

Gorka Benítez sax and flute, Dani Pérez guitar, Abel Boquera organ, David Xirgu drums.

We are closing the Mas i Mas jazz festival programme with the great, inimitable Gorka Benitez at the Jamboree. What can we say that you don’t already know about this saxophonist, flautist, poet and singer? Well, there’s the fact that he has chosen this festival to present a new quartet. It’s an adaptation of the trio that has accompanied him for so many years, with the incorporation on the organ of Abel Boquera, providing a depth and harmonic range that makes the very best of Benitez’ intense, personal repertoire Benitez lives in the roots of music. And, as soon as his lips touch his instrument, his characteristic, straightforward expression goes beyond all the conventions and stylistic clichés of jazz or any other pigeonhole we might want to put him in. Benitez’ busy career has led him to work with a very long list of creative forces and Spanish and international musicians, including David Mengual, Emilio Solla, Arthur Kell, Steve Cardenas, Joe Smith, Bill McHenry, Ben Monder, Carme Canela, Giulia Valle, Aikiko Pavolka, Guillermo Klein, Los Guachos, Martirio, Omara Portuondo and Paco Ibáñez.
