Guinga (Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar) was born in 1950 in the Madureira neighborhood of northern Rio de Janeiro. He studied classical guitar with Jodacil Damasceno and began composing at the age of 16.
Throughout his career, he has worked as a guitarist alongside great artists such as Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alaíde Costa, Cartola, and João Nogueira. His compositions have been performed by musicians like Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Sérgio Mendes, Leila Pinheiro, Chico Buarque, and Ivan Lins, among many others.
Recognized as one of Brazil’s most important contemporary composers, he has recorded numerous albums and collaborated with figures such as Paulo César Pinheiro, Aldir Blanc, and Nei Lopes. His work has been awarded multiple prizes, including the Prêmio da Música Brasileira, and was nominated for a Grammy for Rasgando Seda (2012).
With albums released in Japan and Europe, collaborations with artists like Esperanza Spalding and Maria João, and an esteemed international career, Guinga continues to be a major influence in Brazilian music. In 2021, he released Zaboio, his first album composed entirely of his own lyrics and music, reaffirming his status as one of Brazil’s most innovative musical voices.
