The Pole Jerzy Mączyński is one of the most captivating saxophonists on the new avantgarde jazz scene – a scene incorporating elements of classical free jazz as an aesthetic, together with fervently contemporary sounds. It is a scene that does not compromise on sonic experimentation but at the same time does not sacrifice the melody and magnetic rhythm. A scene which, above all, has instrumentalists and composers of the standard of Mączyński himself. Trained in Warsaw and at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mączyński has toured half of Europe and worked with jazz heretics like the iconoclastic Thomas de Pourquery. In 2018, he founded the free jazz collective P.E. Quartet, the embryo of the group he leads today: Jerry & The Pelican System. In the company of young musicians from different areas, Jerry & The Pelican System present a series of colourful, contrasting, enigmatic compositions with unexpected twists, demonstrating the fine state of avantgarde jazz in Europe.
