Joan Mar Sauqué Quintet – Fats Navarro 100 Anniversary!

Joan Mar Sauqué trumpet, Marçal Perramon tenor sax, Joan Monné piano, Giuseppe Campisi doublebass and Esteve Pi drums.

This year marks the centenary of Theodore ‘Fats’ Navarro (1923 – 1950), one of the greatest exponents of bebop and a great innovator of the jazz trumpet language. Fats Navarro bridged the liveliness of Charlie Parker’s phrasing with the harmonic richness of Tadd Dameron. Successor to Dizzy Gillespie, traveling companion of Kenny Dorham, Miles Davis and Howard McGuee, he was the mentor and main referent of the young Cilfford Brown. The evolution of jazz and, above all, that of the jazz trumpet, have been nourished by the great contribution of Fats Navarro at only 27 years of age. Joan Mar Sauqué is an admirer and follower of Fats Navarro, and in this recital he pays homage to the maestro with versions of his most iconic compositions and his own songs in the style of Fats Navarro.
