Lucy Wijnands: Celebrating the Centennial of Sarah Vaughan

“Lucy has it — something not easy to define in words, but the innate ability to marry notes and words to convey emotion with a down-to-earth authenticity.” – JazzLives, 2023

By the age of 25, Lucy Wijnands had already left an indelible mark on the global jazz scene. With tours across Europe, Israel, and Japan, she claimed victory in the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Vocal Competition and graduated as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar and President’s Award recipient from SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Music.

Now a staple of New York City’s vibrant jazz circuit, Lucy has graced iconic venues such as Birdland NYC, Smalls Jazz Club, and holds a residency at the esteemed Mezzrow Jazz Club in the West Village.

In this special program, Lucy and her band pay tribute to the legendary Sarah Vaughan in celebration of her 100th birthday. Known affectionately as “Sassy” or “The Divine One”, Vaughan is revered as one of the most exceptional vocalists in the history of jazz and popular music. Her remarkable vocal range, flawless technique, and unparalleled emotional expression set a gold standard for jazz performance. Vaughan’s ability to blend jazz, pop, and classical elements with rich tonal depth, intricate phrasing, and improvisational brilliance solidified her place as a transformative figure in music history.

Join Lucy Wijnands for an evening that not only honors the legacy of Sarah Vaughan but also reinterprets her timeless repertoire with authenticity, passion, and a contemporary touch.
