MAYTE ALGUACIL & MICHEL KANAN “Something I Dreamed Last Night” - Jamboree Jazz

Presentation of the album Something I Dreamed Last Night (Fresh Sound New Talent)

Mayte Alguacil vocals, Michael Kanan piano.

If any duo in the world deserves the highest praise, it is undoubtedly the one formed by the singer Mayte Alguacil and the pianist Michael Kanan. These two musicians may come from different generations and different parts of the world but they have many virtues in common. First of all, there are their separate careers: New Yorker Kanan is heir to the finest piano jazz tradition and has been a sideman for Lee Konitz and Tal Farlow, as well as a travelling companion of Jordi Rossy, Mark Turner and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Alguacil, from Madrid, was a follower of Carme Canela and boasts a brilliant career with Victor Correa, Pau Lligadas and Kanan himself. The secret of Alguacil’s and Kanan’s excellence lies in their shared enthusiasm for simplicity, expressive clarity and the same universal, timeless emotion as the repertoire they perform: the great American songbook. There is no vocal trickery or extravagance here; no artifice. But they masterfully perform a series of songs such as the ones you can find on their latest album, Something I Dreamed Last Night, which they will present at the Jamboree.
