New Fly is Julien Bertrand’s group, the quintet mainly plays the leader’s compositions. Their 2nd album “Free revolution zone”, released on the prestigious European label FRESHSOUND RECORDS, is “REVELATION! » Jazz Magazine (December 2019), “REVELATION” Jazz UK Journal (2020), Discovery Jazz Hot 2020. The group’s 3rd album, “Waxmen”, recorded in March 2023 in Barcelona, will be released in January 2024 again for Freshsound Records. A clever mix of musicians with recognized talents such as François Gallix (Michel Grailler, Steve Grossmann…) or Julien Bertrand (Joel Holmes, Seleno Clarke, Sangoma Everett), the group also finds its source of inspiration in the spontaneity of its youngest members like Etienne Deconfin (Gael Horellou, Ari Hoenig) or Arthur Declercq (Les Permutants). The recent addition to the group of young virtuoso alto saxophonist Liam Szimonyk brings to the group a new sound as much anchored in tradition (through the quintet formula trumpet, sax) as in modernity, listening to the improvised flights which characterizes the musical personality of the newcomer in New Fly. New Fly’s music plays a resolutely current Jazz style, borrowing influences from modern jazz (Ambrose Akinmusire, Wallace Roney, Roy Hargrove…) while opening up in small touches to urban styles (hip hop, krunk, soul).
