Paula Barranco and Jan Domènech have teamed up to present their first album as a duo ‘When Love Is Around’ (Microscopi, 2023), on which they explore the different phases of love. Using standards and Brazilian songs, they tell a love story as a circle: from the first moment love appears to the darkness of heartbreak, despair and gentle sadness. The tale includes the reciprocation of love, the consolidation of the relationship, and devotion to the loved one. The circle then closes with the promise of new love. The pair are inspired by duos including Cécile McLorin Salvant and Sullivan Fortner, Fleurine and Brad Mehldau and Carme Canela and Joan Monné, tenderly taking risks while maintaining their originality and personal touch.
