Coast, mountains and jungle, the three great natural regions of Peru, symbolise the exceptional nature of a country rooted in various traditions, from the Creole culture of the Afro-Peruvian people of the coast to that of the indigenous peoples in the Andes. With almost 40 years’ experience, Perú Jazz, one of the most iconic jazz bands in South America, fuse the best of their country’s genres and rhythms with the language and feel of contemporary jazz. However, Perú Jazz’s approach is to mix Peruvian tradition with jazz on an equal footing. They don’t adapt traditional rhythms to jazz, instead they take them as a starting point to build a path to improvisation. Theirs is a fresh approach – a genre of its own that comes from questioning what Peru sounds like. With this original, pioneering formula, this group, made up of great figures in Peruvian music have recorded eight albums and played at festivals such as Montreal, where they were on the same bill as Sting; Umbria; and Cervantino de Guanajuato. They have also worked with Abraham Laboriel and fellow Peruvian Álex Acuña, and have been invited to share the stage with Susana Baca. Years ago now, Perú Jazz performed on TVE’s famous ‘Jazz entre amigos’ programme. At the time, Cifu said: “They are a group that has only one misfortune: coming from a country so far from the circles of cultural expansion.” A hidden gem of jazz visiting the Jamboree as part of their European tour.
