Soweto Kinch Trio – White Juju - Jamboree Jazz

Soweto Kinch sax, Nick Jurd doublebasse and Jason Brown drums.

The prolific Soweto Kinch is certainly one of the pioneers of what some call the “British Jazz Explosion”, a movement that has catapulted Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Theon Cross to fame. A tenor saxophonist, singer, poet and MC, Kinch will perform at the Mas i Mas with The Black Peril, a project inspired by the sounds of ragtime, proto-jazz, West Indian folk music and works by black composers from the early 20th century, a period marked by race riots and conflicts. Kinch links the origins of jazz to styles such as hip-hop and trap, and explores its connection to the elation and defiant optimism of early black music, and the sense of revolutionary danger it symbolised. Al Mas i Mas ‘23 he will present some tracks from his latest album, ‘White Juju’ (2022), on which he blends classical music, jazz and hip-hop.
