Since he graduated from the prestigious New England Conservatory in 2007, double bassist Tom Gamlieli has worked with stars like Danilo Pérez, Joanne Brackeen, Liz Wright, Jerry Bergonzi and trumpeter Avishai Cohen, as well as playing at venues such as the Small Jazz Club (New York), Jazz Dock (Prague) and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington). In 2014, he launched his own trio, with which he released a classy debut, Dania (2017). He has also released well-known albums like Change of Heart (2019), featuring saxophonist Dayna Stephens. The winner of an award from Downbeat magazine, Gamalieli stands out for his particular expressive, lyrical and harmonious style, partly stemming from his own roots. Born in Israel, he is the son of a Kurdish father and a German mother. As well as assimilating the cultural influence of his parents, the young Gamalieli discovered jazz by listening to musicians like Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Jobim, Tigram Hasmayan and his countryman Avishai Cohen. The result is intense, sensual work that has seduced audiences all over the world.
