Born on the island of Mallorca, Toni Vaquer is one of the most important musicians of his generation. A pianist, composer, arranger and big band player, he is one of the teaching mainstays of the Liceu Conservatory, where he leads the Liceu Gran Ensemble. On his own, he has produced extraordinary work with large-format line-ups: Glissando Big Band, Voodoo Collective, etc. – and with small groups, always with an eye on different genres, like jazz, classical, contemporary and even rock, and particular sensitivity when creating music. In 2015, commissioned by the Igualada Jazz Summer Festival, he launched a sextet with one foot in the avant-garde playing pieces composed specially for the musicians accompanying him. The result is an album, ‘Noninó’ (Underpool, 2016), and a dynamic ensemble which continuously seeks new forms of expression and transforms the repertoire: a kind of ‘work in progress’ in the hands of a musician just as formidable as his travelling companions.
