VANESSA RUBIN FEAT. DANNY GRISSETT

Vanessa Rubin vocals, Danny Grissett piano, Joris Teepe bass, Stephen Keogh drums

Vanessa Rubin is one of the great singers on the current jazz scene characterised by a fresh, crystalline but warm sound. Daughter of a Caribbean mother and a father from Louisiana, Rubin, like Nancy Wilson, one of her influences, was born in Cleveland. Others who have had an impact on her music include the trumpeter Blue Mitchell, the vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and the Motown sound. Discovered by Barry Harris and Pharoah Sanders, she made her solo career in New York coinciding with the arrival of Frank Foster and Cecil Bridgewater and as sidewoman for Kenny Burrell and Grover Washington Jr, among others. She has also triumphed in musicals and at festivals around the world. Meanwhile, Danny Grissett began his career in Los Angeles, alongside Billy Higgins, George Coleman and Ralph Moore. Today, he is one of the great pianists of his generation, sideman for Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Steve Nelson, Nicholas Payton and many other important jazz musicians. Grissett and Rubin lead a sublime quartet with a diverse repertoire, including pieces from the singer’s latest album, tunes by Tadd Dameron, to whom Rubin dedicated a show, and other jazz classics.
