Joe Magnarelli trumpet · Virginia MacDonald clarinet · Andrea Pozza piano · Aldo Zunino bass · Bernd Reiter drums.
Young clarinetist Virginia MacDonald is one of the great revelations of contemporary jazz. Born in Toronto, where she lives and works, she has received numerous awards and has performed at the world’s most important clubs—Ronnie Scott’s and Duc de Lombards, among others—and festivals such as those in Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit. A member of the Canadian Jazz Collective, in 2023 she was the guest soloist at the concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the International Clarinet Association. These and other merits add to the list of celebrities she has collaborated with: Harold Mabern, Ira Coleman, Geoff Keezer, Pat Labarbera, Rodney Whitaker, and, as in this case, Joe Magnarelli. A long-time friend of Jamboree, Magnarelli is one of the great trumpeters on the New York scene. The list of musicians he has worked with—Toshiko Akiyoshi, Harry Connick, Jr., Buddy Rich, Maria Schneider, Ray Barretto, Dick Oatts, Grant Stewart, etc.—attest to the trajectory of an artist who has also had a brilliant solo career. And if that weren’t enough, the rhythmic foundation of this quintet, with Italians Andrea Pozza and Aldo Zunino, and Austrian Bernd Reiter, three of the best session musicians on the European scene, should also be mentioned.
