Pianist Alejandro Esperanza returns to the Barcelona Jazz Festival at the head of his trio (Manel Fortià on double bass and Marcelo Woloski on drums) to present his latest album, Olivos. A recording that, he explains himself, represents a symbol of the Mediterranean and the concept of home. His compositions, he says, are “a reflection of those most basic and also most beautiful things with which anyone can feel identified”: they are pieces like Olivos – “deep, lasting and strong roots in the earth”, Josefina – the mother –, Respira – “marvel at the mere fact of existing” – and Riela – “that path of light that is reflected in the sea and that follows us when we walk along the shore”. Music, he summarizes, that moves in a duality: what is local and what is universal, between what is our own and what we all share as human beings.
