The youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer\u00a0<strong>Fela Kuti<\/strong>, he has dedicated his life to preserving (and expanding) a political and musical legacy driven not by nostalgia, but by urgency. A continually evolving saxophonist and percussionist, he joined the band\u00a0<strong>Egypt 80<\/strong>\u00a0before the age of 12.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"931\">In 1997, following\u00a0<strong>Fela<\/strong>\u2019s death and in accordance with his wishes,\u00a0<strong>Seun<\/strong>\u00a0took over the leadership of\u00a0<strong>Egypt 80<\/strong>, a role he still holds today. His social commitment is inseparable from the stage: he has taken part in campaigns such as #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS, and has revived the Movement of the People (M.O.P.), the party founded by his father in 1979 and soon after repressed by the military government.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"1713\">His discography with\u00a0<strong>Egypt 80<\/strong>\u00a0traces this evolution:\u00a0<em data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"999\">Many Things<\/em>\u00a0(2008),\u00a0<em data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1037\">From Africa with Fury: Rise<\/em>\u00a0(2011), co-produced by\u00a0<strong>Brian Eno<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>John Reynolds<\/strong>,\u00a0<em data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1112\">A Long Way Beginning<\/em>\u00a0(2014), and\u00a0<em data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1138\">Black Times<\/em>\u00a0(2018), Grammy-nominated and featuring\u00a0<strong>Carlos Santana<\/strong>. At the same time,\u00a0<strong>Seun<\/strong>\u00a0has built global alliances:\u00a0<em data-start=\"1245\" data-end=\"1261\">African Dreams<\/em>\u00a0(2022) with Black Thought; collaborations on\u00a0<strong>Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1344\">The Age of Pleasure<\/em>\u00a0(2023) on \u201cFloat\u201d and \u201cKnows Better\u201d; and crossovers with\u00a0<strong>Talib Kweli<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Madlib<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<em data-start=\"1429\" data-end=\"1443\">Liberation 2<\/em>, as well as a new version of \u201cBad Man Lighter\u201d with\u00a0<strong>Black Thought<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Vic Mensa<\/strong>. He sums it up clearly: \u201cThe world has become one big commercial village [\u2026] There are artists who just copy and paste [\u2026] But there are also young people everywhere making exciting music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1715\" data-end=\"2561\">His latest album is\u00a0<em data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1774\">Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)<\/em>\u00a0(2024), released by\u00a0<strong>Record Kicks<\/strong>\u00a0six years after\u00a0<em data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1837\">Black Times<\/em>. Executive-produced by\u00a0<strong>Lenny Kravitz<\/strong>\u00a0and with artistic production by\u00a0<strong>Sodi Marciszewer<\/strong>\u00a0(Fela\u2019s original engineer), it features guests such as\u00a0<strong>Damian Marley<\/strong>\u00a0and Sampa The Great. Singles like \u201cDEY\u201d (feat.\u00a0<strong>Damian Marley<\/strong>, presented at the Grammys for Best African Music Performance), \u201cT.O.P.\u201d and \u201cStand Well Well\u201d reinforce an Afrobeat that is rooted, sharp, and contemporary. As\u00a0<strong>Seun says<\/strong>: \u201cThe album was written for the consciousness of the working class [\u2026] Since big corporations have taken over music, many people have felt insecure or \u2018less than\u2019.
