Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 \u2014 Committed Afrobeat and a Pan-African Legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Seun Kuti<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most magnetic presences in contemporary African music: a musician, singer, composer, and Pan-African activist with a vibrant, high-energy live show. The youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer\u00a0Fela Kuti<\/strong>, he has dedicated his life to preserving (and expanding) a political and musical legacy driven not by nostalgia, but by urgency. A continually evolving saxophonist and percussionist, he joined the band\u00a0Egypt 80<\/strong>\u00a0before the age of 12.<\/p>\n

In 1997, following\u00a0Fela<\/strong>\u2019s death and in accordance with his wishes,\u00a0Seun<\/strong>\u00a0took over the leadership of\u00a0Egypt 80<\/strong>, a role he still holds today. His social commitment is inseparable from the stage: he has taken part in campaigns such as #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS, and has revived the Movement of the People (M.O.P.), the party founded by his father in 1979 and soon after repressed by the military government.<\/p>\n

His discography with\u00a0Egypt 80<\/strong>\u00a0traces this evolution:\u00a0Many Things<\/em>\u00a0(2008),\u00a0From Africa with Fury: Rise<\/em>\u00a0(2011), co-produced by\u00a0Brian Eno<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0John Reynolds<\/strong>,\u00a0A Long Way Beginning<\/em>\u00a0(2014), and\u00a0Black Times<\/em>\u00a0(2018), Grammy-nominated and featuring\u00a0Carlos Santana<\/strong>. At the same time,\u00a0Seun<\/strong>\u00a0has built global alliances:\u00a0African Dreams<\/em>\u00a0(2022) with Black Thought; collaborations on\u00a0Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0The Age of Pleasure<\/em>\u00a0(2023) on \u201cFloat\u201d and \u201cKnows Better\u201d; and crossovers with\u00a0Talib Kweli<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Madlib<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Liberation 2<\/em>, as well as a new version of \u201cBad Man Lighter\u201d with\u00a0Black Thought<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Vic Mensa<\/strong>. He sums it up clearly: \u201cThe world has become one big commercial village [\u2026] There are artists who just copy and paste [\u2026] But there are also young people everywhere making exciting music.\u201d<\/p>\n

His latest album is\u00a0Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)<\/em>\u00a0(2024), released by\u00a0Record Kicks<\/strong>\u00a0six years after\u00a0Black Times<\/em>. Executive-produced by\u00a0Lenny Kravitz<\/strong>\u00a0and with artistic production by\u00a0Sodi Marciszewer<\/strong>\u00a0(Fela\u2019s original engineer), it features guests such as\u00a0Damian Marley<\/strong>\u00a0and Sampa The Great. Singles like \u201cDEY\u201d (feat.\u00a0Damian Marley<\/strong>, presented at the Grammys for Best African Music Performance), \u201cT.O.P.\u201d and \u201cStand Well Well\u201d reinforce an Afrobeat that is rooted, sharp, and contemporary. As\u00a0Seun says<\/strong>: \u201cThe album was written for the consciousness of the working class [\u2026] Since big corporations have taken over music, many people have felt insecure or \u2018less than\u2019. My album is the opposite of that materialism.\u201d In 2025, the deluxe edition adds collaborations with\u00a0De La Soul<\/strong>,\u00a0Adi Oasis<\/strong>,\u00a0Kamasi Washington<\/strong>,\u00a0Don Letts<\/strong>,\u00a0Alborosie<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n
