Manuel \u00c1lvarez Trio \u2014 Standards, Jazz, and a Unique Voice<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a long career as a sideman, in What We Are Here For<\/em>, Manuel \u00c1lvarez<\/strong> explores his most personal side through the standards that have shaped his training and his way of understanding jazz. The influence of figures such as Monty Alexander<\/strong>, Ray Brown<\/strong>, Oscar Peterson<\/strong>, Christian McBride<\/strong>, Stanley Clarke<\/strong>, Paul Chambers<\/strong>, and Niels-Henning \u00d8rsted Pedersen<\/strong> runs through the repertoire, arrangements, and approach of the trio, with a clear focus on tradition and groove.<\/p>\n

The program is built around classics like You\u2019d Be So Nice to Come Home To<\/em>, Never Let Me Go<\/em>, Moonlight in Vermont<\/em>, My Foolish Heart<\/em>, My One and Only Love<\/em>, and What Am I Here For?<\/em>, with a special nod to the centennials of Oscar Peterson<\/strong> and Ray Brown<\/strong>, celebrated in 2025 and 2026, incorporating compositions by these two jazz giants.<\/p>\n

Born in Barcelona in 1967, Manuel \u00c1lvarez<\/strong> began his musical journey as a self-taught musician before completing his training at the Taller de M\u00fasics and graduating from ESMUC. Although he has explored styles such as flamenco, Latin music, folk, and dance music, jazz has always been the central axis of his career, with his double bass learning shaped by listening, experience, and occasional lessons with masters like Pierre Boussaguet and Javier Colina.<\/p>\n

His career includes key stages in the Barcelona Jazz Orquestra<\/strong> and Ignasi Terraza<\/strong>\u2019s trio, with international tours and recordings alongside artists such as Nicholas Payton<\/strong>, Phil Woods<\/strong>, Benny Golson<\/strong>, and Jesse Davis<\/strong>. In this project as a bandleader, \u00c1lvarez emphasizes the essential roots of the language he performs: \u201cJazz wouldn\u2019t exist without the blues. First came the blues, then jazz, and then rock,\u201d an idea that permeates his sound and his understanding of music.<\/p>\n
