Despu\u00e9s de estudiar trompeta en la Baltimore School for the Arts, curs\u00f3 una licenciatura en educaci\u00f3n musical en el Conservatorio de M\u00fasica de Oberlin. Al llegar a Francia en 1992, no tard\u00f3 mucho en establecerse como un trompetista de calidad y un buen cantante.
