The manouche jazz scene is booming in Barcelona, with groups like Vamp demonstrating the dynamism of this French-inspired genre that puts the strings firmly at the centre of what some call “European swing”. This line-up of promising youngsters in the gypsy jazz tradition was inspired by the spirit of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, and, above all, the guidance of the great Albert Bello – one of the great Iberian gypsy names and founder of the first and only manouche school anywhere in Spain, at the EMCA in L’Hospitalet. They have now performed at big European festivals and, at the Jamboree, they will present their first album, Selva, an attempt to blend manouche with Mediterranean-inspired music. A party night with wild rhythms at the Plaça Reial club.
