Hailing from Azerbaijan and based in New York, Amina Figarova is an internationally recognized composer, pianist, and bandleader with diverse influences. These three roles shine in Figarova’s sextets—bands with remarkable chemistry that bring her detailed arrangements to life. Each member stands out as a first-rate soloist, but their dedication to Figarova’s eclectic and powerful compositions gives the group its emotional depth and elite status. The Amina Figarova Sextet has been acclaimed at major festivals like the Newport Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
All music will be original compositions by Amina Figarova from her upcoming album “Flying High Above”.
“Many of the strongest composer-arranger-orchestra leaders in jazz are women. Think Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider. Amina Figarova has a chance to join their company. All she needs is an orchestra. Figarova’s compositions for small ensembles have been brilliant since at least 2005, when she released September Suite, still the deepest, most powerful jazz response to the events of 9/11…” — Thomas Conrad, Stereophile Magazine
