XAVIER CASELLAS' NEW QUINTET - Jamboree Jazz
XAVIER CASELLAS’ NEW QUINTET

Unfortunately there are not too many male jazz singers frequenting the Barcelona scene. Xavier Casellas is the exception that proves the rule, an elegant vocalist who, among other achievements, has got up on stage at Smalls in New York. Born in Calella he grew up listening to Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Holiday, Ellington and Bennett. He is now considered a singer somewhere between the classicism of Harry Connick and the avant-gardism of Kurt Elling. Casellas has written lyrics for pieces by Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Fredric Mompou and Emilio Solla; he has shared the stage with Ben Monder, Jorge Roeder, Víctor Prieto and Solla himself; he has put out albums like Yesterday’s Sun or, more recently, Unguarded Smiles, praised by the critics and the public. At the Jamboree he appears with a band made up of four of the best young Catalan jazz players.
