Gastón Joya double bass · Miguel “Wiwi” García piano · Frank Durán drums
The New Cuban Trio offers an immersion into the world of Afro-Cuban jazz through a contemporary lens. The repertoire combines original compositions by Gastón Joya with works by influential figures such as Mario Bauzá, Chico O’Farrill and Charles Mingus, alongside fresh interpretations of Cuban classics: boleros, danzones, filin and son. Each concert is built around improvisation, dialogue between the musicians and the rhythmic richness of Cuban tradition, offering a modern, elegant experience that remains deeply connected to its roots.
Gastón Joya is one of the most prominent Cuban double bassists of his generation and a leading figure in Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz. He has collaborated with Chucho Valdés, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano, Sting and Buena Vista Social Club, performing at major international festivals and theatres. As a bandleader, composer and arranger, he has developed his own musical language, bringing together Cuban tradition and contemporary jazz.
