BCUC – Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness – have been channeling the spirit of Soweto for over twenty years. Indigenous funk, hip-hop consciousness and punk-rock energy merge into a sound that is both deeply rooted and utterly original. Their motto is clear: “Music for the people, by the people, with the people.”
From their humble beginnings rehearsing in a shipping container, just a stone’s throw from the church where Desmond Tutu helped organise the escape of some of the most wanted anti-apartheid activists, they continued to believe in their dream of self-determination and empowerment. Today, they perform at major international festivals including Glastonbury Festival, Roskilde Festival, Afropunk Brooklyn, WOMAD, Sziget Festival and Couleur Café, among many others.
In 2023, BCUC received the prestigious WOMEX Artist Award, an honour usually reserved for artists with longer-established careers, in recognition of their fearless work and their exceptionally powerful live performances.
Standing concert.
