THE BAND
Fredi’s Jazz Band is a very young ensemble made up of 21 musicians and 3 singers, founded eleven years ago at the Municipal Music School of Matadepera. With an average age of 23, its members stand out for their extraordinary musical talent. Some are still studying, while others have completed higher education at ESMUC, the Conservatori del Liceu and Taller de Músics. Today, they are all professional musicians.
The band is characterised by a creative, conceptual and improvisation-based musical language. Its repertoire explores the history of Big Band music, from the Swing era to the present day, combining instrumental and vocal pieces.
The musicians of Fredi’s Jazz Band play from the depths of their feelings, an approach to music that is reflected both in the sound of each individual instrument and in the sound of the Big Band as a whole.
When creating music, they seek to make their improvisations the result of moving away from established patterns and clichés, finding new lines of expression within themselves and avoiding preconceived musical ideas. Ultimately, they seek the purity of the immediate.
As their director, Enric Alegre, explains: «This musical language must be understood and played from the stomach, passing through the heart, but never reaching the head. This music leaves no room for thought or reasoning. It simply has to be felt, one might say, in a primal way».
The band’s repertoire is creative and conceptual and includes works by composers such as Charles Mingus and Oliver Nelson, among others.
